Worked on this awhile back (like, two months ago?). I just didn’t put it up because I wasn’t sure if the unfinished chest part will be appropriate to post up….>.> so I finally just decided to crop it out in this work-in-progress. I will show the full image (which isn’t much) later when I finally put some of her long hair in to hide her chest part. Something for a contest on Gaiaonline.com. Character belongs to Glass Carrousel.

My next work-in-progress (WIP) of the Hmong girl painting after nearly 7 - 8 months of hiatus… I’ve been busy with other things, like commissions and work so I just kind of left things as they are and recently came back to try and finish it again… hopefully soon. And also because I took a ton of cloud reference pictures and did studies of them to get the cloudscape right in the background.

I haven’t really thought of a name for this painting/illustration yet (besides the generic name up there), or where I am going with this exactly, but I’m getting there, if ever so slowly.

Art contest entry a charity art book on DA…. I had months to do this, like nearly a year. Been waiting for inspiration while practicing but… inspiration never came so I was messing with a few concepts until I liked this one best. Hopefully it’ll turn out good. :)

As much as I would love to try different perspectives and stuff, I have absolutely no sense of depth.

The human eye is tricky sometimes, so judging things like foreshortening and depth and perspective can be really difficult. how we see things in real life isn’t necessarily how we are going to transfer them into a 2D piece of artwork. Find a really intensely angled picture, something with a drastic foreshortening effect. Trace over it, just simple blocky guidelines nothing fancy. I can confidently say that there’s a 90% chance that even though you’ve traced off a real human’s image something is going to look ‘weird’ or ‘off’.

Maybe the neck looks too long, even if your lines exactly match up with the photograph. Maybe the fingers look weird and off, even if your lines exactly match up with the photograph.

Things get difficult because you’re not just translating a real image in your head into something 2 dimensional , but your translating it into a visually appealing look that still maintains a realistic balance.
